    Mr Zeldman’s take on life

Kids can keep you up all night but it’s all worth it. Domestic animals give love freely to the least deserving, but their lives are short and their ends are often brutal. And it’s worth it. It is all worth it. Every day, even a sad day blurred by headaches and filled with business meetings, is magical and infinite. This dance, this particular proton dance, will never come again. This tune we’re too busy to hear will not be played again. Never forget to be thankful for your life.

    Hypnotizing chickens

Senior officers say [Powerpoint] does come in handy when the goal is not imparting information, as in briefings for reporters.

…Those types of PowerPoint presentations, Dr. Hammes said, are known as “hypnotizing chickens.”

This NYT article seems to be written to provide an opportunity to mention to Edward Tufte’s essay on Powerpoint:

Alas, slideware often reduces the analytical quality of presentations. In particular, the popular PowerPoint templates (ready-made designs) usually weaken verbal and spatial reasoning, and almost always corrupt statistical analysis.

Yesterday we saw what change looks like

[T]he enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being… – WHO

For now, the significance of the [health care reform vote] is moving the United States FROM a system in which people can assume they will have health coverage IF they are old enough (Medicare), poor enough (Medicaid), fortunate enough (working for an employer that offers coverage, or able themselves to bear expenses), or in some other way specially positioned (veterans; elected officials)… TOWARD a system in which people can assume they will have health-care coverage. Period.   – Why This Moment Matters

Shakespeare couldn’t have said it better

“I got mad love for you, shorty. That’s on the real. I like — I wanna like listen to Boyz II Men when I’m with you.”

We only just now got around to watching The Wackness. It’s got a soundtrack that will send you traveling back through time. We’re still watching, but so far, two thumbs up.

    Poison

The past few days have been filled with random bad-music flashbacks. Tonight was no exception:

    Every rose has its thorn
Just like every night has its dawn
Just like every cowboy sings a sad, sad song
    Every rose has its thorn
    Yeah it does

    Sing it, Brett.

    Calling it like it is

The point is that drugging and raping a child, then leaving the country before you can be sentenced for it, is behavior our society should not — and at least in theory, does not — tolerate, no matter how famous, wealthy or well-connected you are, no matter how old you were when you finally got caught, no matter what your victim says about it now, no matter how mature she looked at 13, no matter how pushy her mother was, and no matter how many really swell movies you’ve made.
